Why private tuition?

Independent research has shown that one-to-one private tuition in Mathematics is highly beneficial.  Students’ performance at GCSE is on average around ½ a GCSE grade higher (equivalent to nearly a whole level in the new 9-1 grading structure) than would be the case if the student did not experience individual tutoring.  (Ireson, J & Rushforth K, “Evaluating the impact of individual tutoring on GCSE attainment”, 2005).

A second and equally valid reason to consider individual tuition stems from when the new GCSE and A level curriculum was introduced in 2016 -2017. The DfE advised schools that they should allow a minimum of 3 ½ hours teaching per week for Mathematics in Years 7 -11, to ensure that the new Mathematics GCSE, aka called ‘big fat maths’ was taught thoroughly and completely.  Clearly this is not happening in schools…Senior leaders faced the problem of what subjects needed to be thrown out of the school timetable to facilitate this.  And where are all the Mathematics teachers to staff these extra lessons? So no matter how innately able your son/daughter is at Mathematics or how competent and experienced their teacher might be, believe me, for the teacher in the classroom, it is usually a race just to get to the end of the syllabus so that they can say to parents and pupils  that they have covered all the topics.  This begs two big questions: how thoroughly has the course been taught? And:  has your child been properly prepared so that they can fulfil their potential?
